About the Coaches
Chris Bugnitz is our head coach in both boys’ and girls’ cross country and an assistant track coach. She was a student athlete, winning the mile run at State and designated as McCluer North’s scholar athlete (St. Louis Post-Dispatch) in high school, and continuing to run at Illinois State where she was the NCAA Division II Champion in the 1500 meter run. Coach Bugnitz joined the Burroughs coaching staff in 1995. The girls’ cross country teams were in the Final Four in 1996 and 1997, and her teams have won five District Championships. On the boys’ side, she has coached teams to six District Titles and three teams to the Final Four – winning a state title in 2006, finishing fourth in 2008 and third in 2009. Coach Bugnitz is a certified Level 2 USATF Coach, she holds a Track and Field technical certificate and she completed the Sport Science for Endurance Events through the Track and Field Academy of the USFTCCA.
Flennard Thorpe joined the Burroughs staff in 2001 after working for 31 years in the Ritenour School District. At JBS, Thorpe coaches both boys’ and girls’ cross country as well as boys’ and girls’ track. While at Ritenour, Thorpe taught 7th grade social studies and 9th grade English and was also the head girls’ track and cross country coach.
