About the Coaches
Daniel Harris joined the Burroughs faculty in 1996. He is director of Diversity & Multicultural Education. He co-teaches African-American Studies, coordinates the 10th Grade Diversity Seminar and coaches boys' and girls' track. Harris holds a dual bachelor's degree in political science and African-American studies from Washington University.
John Merritt joined the Burroughs staff in the fall of 2011. He currently teaches history in addition to coaching Varsity Football, Varsity Girls Basketball and Varsity Track and Field. Before joining the JBS staff John was the Dean of Students and Head Track and Field coach at Crossroads College Preparatory School. John earned his bachelors degree in History and Education from Washington University in 1995.
Flennard Thorpe joined the Burroughs staff in 2001 after working for 31 years in the Ritenour School District. At JBS, Thorpe coaches both boys’ and girls’ cross country as well as boys’ and girls’ track. While at Ritenour, Thorpe taught 7th grade social studies and 9th grade English and was also the head girls’ track and cross country coach.
Ray Thorpe joined the Burroughs coaching staff in 2005 as a varsity football and track coach as well as teaching 7th and 8th grade physical education. Coach Thorpe earned All-American status as a baseball player at the University of Missouri and also played football at Mizzou where he played in, and won, the 1967 Sugar Bowl over the University of Florida. For his accomplishments in both sports, Coach Thorpe was inducted into the University of Missouri Hall of Fame. Coach Thorpe holds two master's degrees from Washington University in St. Louis in Secondary School Administration as well as Human Resource Management.
Meridith Thorpe (JBS '95) joined the JBS coaching staff in 2009 as the head varsity field hockey coach and the assistant varsity basketball coach. She also teaches 7th and 8th grade physical education and works in admissions. After graduating from Burroughs, where Thorpe helped her team win three Midwest Field Hockey titles, she went on to have a decorated career at the University of Virginia as a four-time All-American. Upon graduation from UVA with a bachelor's degree in sociology, Thorpe has coached at Ohio State, UVA, the University of Iowa and now at Burroughs.
Chris Bugnitz joined the Burroughs faculty in 1995. She is the boys' and girls' varsity cross country coach and assistant boys' and girls' track coach. Bugnitz holds a bachelor's degree in health from Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville and a master's in physical education from Southeast Missouri State University.
