Fall Sports Awards

January 6, 2017

During assembly on Friday, January 6, AD Peter Tasker and program coaches congratulated 48 student athletes who have been honored by the press and various league organizations for their participation in fall sports. A full listing follows Tasker's opening remarks.

Good morning. Each athletic awards assembly as preamble I often share the words of players and coaches, as a window into the soul of the journey that is Burroughs team athletics. Those who know me well know that the philosophy and vision I work to cultivate in the Athletic Department is not to focus on celebrating the goals achieved, rather to celebrate what we become in the pursuit of our goals. It is our sheer unadulterated joy in competing with our hair on fire, it is the beautiful health benefits realized in physical exertion, and it is the strength we build in our character in learning some of life’s great lessons through the journey of Bomber sport. How have you grown through the experience to be better prepared to face the adversity that awaits outside of these walls, on your great life’s journey? This is what captures my and my coach colleagues' imagination. However, magic comes in many forms, and on that occasional journey that ends in a championship, there is an alchemy that can be breathtaking. To this end, I share a glimpse of a coach’s message to his team before the championship game, which I pick up in midstream:

The point I’m making is that no matter how talented a team is, the path to a Championship is never smooth.  There are heart-stopping moments along the way where you wonder if this is where it ends.  But ultimately, the team that raises the trophy is the one who never lets that dream die in the face of adversity. You all have lived it this entire season.  Which is why you are one of two teams still alive in the tournament.  You went down 1-0 against Lutheran South early in the season before prevailing in that contest.  You also surrendered the first goal of the games against St. Mary’s and Parkway Central before winning both in regulation. And the Priory tilt in the sectional round certainly had its moments where you wondered if this is where the ride ended. So what you all did yesterday may have come as a surprise to those who don’t know us, who don’t know the heartbeat of this team.  But it shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone in this room. You have earned your way here not only because of your skill level, but also when your backs have been thrown against the wall, you all have come out with your grittiest efforts of the season. Herb Brooks told the 1980 US Men’s Olympic hockey team that “great moments are born from great opportunity.”  Today at 2pm, many of you all will lace up the boots for your final meaningful game.  At that time, you will have the opportunity to remove your name from the list of thousands of Burroughs soccer players and add it to the list of few. I’d consider that a great opportunity. And around 4pm today, when your name is on the list of a few, I’d consider that a great moment. The thousands of us who never had this opportunity are all backing you and cheering you on as you prepare to leave our side of the ledger and join the list of Champions. Fondly, Davey Desloge, Class of ‘94
