Sandy soils of woods and prairies,

 Flower
Blue, irregular, pea-like with 3 apparent petals. Individual flowers (2/3" wide) form clusters in the shape of a spike. The cluster is often 4" to 8" long.

 Leaves
Basal, palmately compound, entire, leaflets 7 - 11, leaflets 1" to 2" long.
