Ben Remis '18

April 13, 2017

Ben Remis '18 was featured in the 4.13.17 St. Louis Post-Dispatch, having won the Metro League's singles title. "John Burroughs junior Ben Remis admitted his match in the championship of the No. 1 singles flight at the Metro League boys tennis tournament was not his best. But it may have been his gutsiest. Remis battled back time and again Wednesday and defeated Principia's Wyatt Dale, 6-3, 6-3 at Westminster. Remis, who medaled at state in doubles as a freshman and in singles as a sophomore, trailed the hard hitting Dale 3-1, 40-0 before rallying to win the final five games of the set. Remis came back twice from 40-15 deficits and once at 40-0 in the opening set on his serve with a no-ad format. 'I wasn't playing my best,' said Remis, whose younger sister Sami finished second in state in Class 1 in singles in the fall. 'I just had to get back to basics. Maybe I was a little too nervous. I had to fight and find a way to win every point. It certainly wasn't easy because he is a very good player. It was the first time I had ever played him and every point was tough. The thing that mattered was that I won the big points.' Bombers coach Scott Sutter felt Remis' tournament experience was key to his championship. 'He was just able to hang around,' Sutter said. 'He was able to win the points he had to win. He should feel that he belongs up there with some of the top players in the area.' Remis needed a tiebreaker in the semifinals Monday just to reach the championship. He won that after going 8-8 in an eight-game pro set format against Priory's Victor Djavaherian. ... John Burroughs swept the top two singles flights with the win from Remis at No. 1 and an exciting victory from [Matthew] Fan ['19] at No. 2. Fan saved a match point against him in a 0-6, 7-5 (11-9) win over Patrick Milburn of Priory.
