John Burroughs Is in the House

On Thursday, May 23, John Burroughs ~ the sculpture ~ was installed on the north side of the STAR building, overlooking the football field and track.

Artists from around the country were invited to propose a concept for this spot on campus. After reviewing 200+ submissions, a committee of parents and alums chose Tom Friedman's life-size sculpture of the school's namesake. One of the top contemporary artists in the world, Friedman is a member of the JBS Class of 1983. His work "Looking Up" stands in front of the planetarium at the St. Louis Science Center.

In addition to a time-lapse video of the installation, here are a few pictures of John Burroughs "under construction" as well as a shot of Andy Abbott with Friedman; of John Burroughs, barefoot and hat in hand, in situ; and of John Burroughs watching his first field day!
