Bomber Volleyball kicked off the 2019 season at the Visitation Academy
Invitational Tournament on Saturday. As our team got used to playing
together, the Bombers were able to gain cohesion throughout the day and
put together some rallies that really showed everyone what this team is
going to be capable of.
After dropping the first match to perennial powerhouse Incarnate Word,
the Bombers split with Webster Groves in our second pool-play match
(25-21, 23-25). Our next pool-play match was a crossover match against
Visitation where the Bombers won an exciting first set (29-27) and
remained competitive, but lost the next two sets (22-25, 13-15). The day
ended on a loss to Webster Groves in the tournament playoffs.
For several of our players, this was their first real experience at the
varsity level. We graduated five Seniors that were part of the starting
rotation last year and it will take some time for this team to fully
come together on the court. This is a hard-working, athletic group with
a lot of volleyball experience so the Bombers will continue to improve
every day and be a threat to every team we play against this season.
Here’s the Varsity roster as of Sept. 2:
Gabi Moore (12), Adina Cazacu-De Luca (12), Lindsey Okafor (12), Jasmin
Rayner (11), Abby Philpott (11), Haleigh Robinson (11), Vanessa Polk
(10), Ellie Skale (9), Julia Reichman (9), Kennedy Holmes (9), Emma
The Volleyball Program added a fourth team this year at the high school
level. We now have Varsity, JV Blue, JV Gold, and C teams. We also have
three middle school teams between 7th and 8th grades. The program is
growing, the level of play continues to improve, we have a great
coaching staff - things are looking good for Bomber Volleyball!
This years JBS Football squad is off to a great start! Led by Captains Carlos Hillman, Rob Leavitt, Nate Ogelsby and Chris Pittman the team is excited and full of energy. Last week we started our season by matching up with the Soldan Tigers. The Bombers started the game with a 2 yard TD run by Malachi Chunn and finished the game with a 30 yard interception return for a TD by Chris Pittman. And between those two plays the game was dominated by the Blue and Gold.
The Bomber Defense was stifling forcing 5 turnovers in the game, two for scores!!! And the Bomber offense was very efficient going for 403 yards on only 46 plays.

Varsity Field Hockey
The Varsity hockey team opened up this past weekend at the annual Gateway Classic Tournament! Preseason, we all would agree, is a wonderful time to train skills, to teach tactical concepts, to bond as a program and eventually as a team but nothing replaces the beauty of an actual game, a match against beings not sporting the blue and gold. Eighteen strong the Bombers came ready to play. Well not until Saturday that is... Monsoon like rains would cancel Friday nights festivities, so the Bombers were looking at a schedule of three games in twelve hours! A tall order for most but not for these fierce Bombers! The varsity squad would go 2-1 on the day. A very solid showing for the official opening of the season. The beauty of this event is that it gives us an idea of where we are, what we need and where we're headed. It gives all an opportunity to get out there and simply play. Nothing at stake but everything to gain. The team is made up of many experienced veteran players while also folding in the youth and talent of some new, fresh faces. We look forward to everyday together, staying in the present, in the now. Wednesday the team will travel to Lutheran South and then wrap up the week with our home opener against Westminster on Saturday. We are super proud of the progress made. The journey has begun and we look forward to sharing the ride with you all in Bomber Nation!

JV Field Hockey
The 2019 JV Bomber Hockey Squad kicked off the season at the Gateway Memorial Classic Tournament. We loaded up the bus on Friday night and just as we arrived at the fields, a tornado warning was issued. So it was a quick turnaround to head right back to JBS and seek safety inside! We made the most of it with a pizza party, core values discussion and card games. The weather on Friday night never cleared up for us to be able to play our games, so we crammed 4 mini-games in on Saturday instead. Our first game in pool play was against Cor Jesu. The 1-0 win came from a goal by Milah Padda, assisted by Marin Guthrie. Our second game in pool play was a 0-0 tie against St. Joe. And for our third and final pool game we faced off against Assumption, who had so far beat everyone in our pool. So, we had to get the win against Assumption in order to put us in the championship game...and with a goal by freshman Avery Boswell we did just that! The championship game against DuPont Manual was an intense and well played game by both teams. Sarah Wilkins, despite having played 3 games in the STL heat, was hustling and fighting for 50/50 balls all over the field. She and Katie Kantrovitz came up with a picture perfect double team on the sidelines. The Bomber attackers earned 3 attack penalty corners and had several shots on goal, but unfortunately nothing went in the cage. The game ended in a 0-1 loss for us, but we took home second place in a very challenging bracket of teams. Great start to the season Bomb!
