Fall Sports Awards

January 5, 2018

During assembly on Friday, January 5, AD Peter Tasker and program coaches congratulated 53 student athletes who have been honored by the press and various league organizations for their participation in fall sports. A full listing follows Tasker's opening remarks.

Good morning.

Each athletic awards assembly as preamble I often share the words of players and coaches, as a window into the soul of the journey that is Burroughs team athletics. Those who know me well know that the philosophy and vision we work to cultivate in the Athletic Department is not to place too much focus on celebrating the goals achieved, rather to celebrate what we become in the pursuit of our goals. It is our sheer unadulterated joy in competing with our hair on fire, it is the beautiful health benefits realized in physical exertion, and it is the strength we build in our character in learning some of life’s great lessons through the journey of Bomber sport. How have you grown through the experience to be better prepared to face the adversity that awaits outside of these walls, on your great life’s journey? This is what captures our coaches’ imagination.

Today, I share a pre-game note from a coach to his team:

The theme for his note is PULLING TOGETHER. He begins with a quote from Virginia Burden: “Cooperation is the thorough conviction that nobody can get there unless everybody gets there.”

Coach goes on to say: Today’s message seems most appropriate considering the weather is more fitting for a goose than a human. While the author of the following is unknown, “Lessons from Geese” is a powerful illustration from nature of the rules of high performance teamwork. As you read about the natural unity that exists among this species remember – this same unity can and should exist in our soccer program!

Author: As geese flap their wings, they create an uplift for the bird following. By flying in a V formation, the whole flock adds 71% greater flying range than if any bird were to fly alone.

Coach: If we share a common direction and sense of community, we can get where we are going more quickly and easily because we are traveling on the thrust of one another!

Author: Whenever a goose falls out of formation, it suddenly feels the drag and resistance of trying to fly alone, and quickly gets back into formation to take advantage of the lifting power of the bird immediately in front.

Coach: If we have as much sense as geese, we will stay in formation with those who are headed where we want to go, and we will be willing to accept their help as well as give ours to others.

Author: When the lead goose gets tired, it rotates back into formation and another goose flies at the point position.

Coach: If we take turns doing the hard tasks and sharing leadership as with the geese, we become interdependent with one another.

Author: The geese in formation honk from behind to encourage those up front to keep up their speed.

Coach: If we “honk”, we need to make sure it is positive and encouraging.

Author: When a goose gets sick or wounded or is shot down, two geese drop out of formation and follow it down to help and protect it. They stay with it until it is able to fly again, or dies. They then launch out on their own, with another formation or catch up with the flock.

Coach: If we have as much sense as geese, we too will stand by each other in difficult times, as well as when we are strong. Let us all try to fly in formation and remember to drop back to help those who might need it!

And I say, thank you, Coach, you old goose!

Today we honor our fall athletes who were recognized for their achievements by their leagues and the local press. First up is:

To our athletes, we salute you! Thank you to our remarkable faculty and staff for the wonderful support; thank you to our extraordinary coaches for whom it is more a passion than a job; thank you to all our Bomber families for working tirelessly to bring richness to the experience; and thank you to our entire student body for investing yourselves so fully in our pursuit of excellence. It is, indubitably, a great day to be a Bomber! Thank you!
