Tasker's closing remarks:
I believe the only way to chase greatness is by competing with honor. Without honor, how can there be greatness? This is the enormous promise of the developmental value of sport. We are put in the toughest of positions: we practice like mad, we suffer physically and emotionally, we fail regularly, we are pushed in so many ways, and regularly to the point of exhaustion, we fill our heads with hopes and dreams, we imagine glory and the affirmation of our peers, and when the whistle blows we are expected to compete fiercely, yet fairly. We have asked everything of you. We have put you in a zero-sum game: there is only one winner. And our society, at all levels, places a premium on winning. You rarely see a program about how far a particular athlete has grown, unless they are a champion. Where is the show about one overcoming great adversity, by virtue of which the athlete is a better person, better prepared to face the adversity of the world outside, better prepared to be a teammate, whether it be in collegiate athletic endeavors, undergraduate or graduate school academic endeavors, work place environment, as a member of a family, or member of a community. Walking onto the athletic stage (as other stages here at Burroughs) requires you to summon your courage to dare to fail spectacularly. This is not about overcoming your opponent. This is about overcoming yourself. Your competition is in the mirror. Every day, you must quiet the negative voice, muster the courage, lean into the adversity and dare to compete. In the words of John Wooden: Success is the peace of mind which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you did your best to become the best you are capable of becoming.

Where is this celebrated in this world? We just don’t see this enough because it does not make for good entertainment. Well, my friends and colleagues, it is celebrated right here, where it matters deeply. The most important aspect of our athletic activity here is how you develop, how you grow, and the person you become. This is the enormous promise of what we do. Our mission is: To champion character through athletics so we cultivate holistic growth in self and community.

I find myself talking a lot about what this looks like, and a few examples come to mind:

When we knock them down, we pick them up.
We are never griping to officials, even when it hurts – no palms up. We cultivate a next play mentality.
Our body language must always be positive, as this enhances the prospect of our actions to be positive.
We manage lopsided games, to find ways to work on our game at 100% effort, without running up the score on our opponents.
We recognize when our opponent makes a good play, and we acknowledge it.
We never, ever give up, no matter what. We compete to the end.
We work through the often excruciating pain of big game losses with dignity.
We are gracious in victory, letting our empathy inform us of how our opponents feel.
We are proud of every one of you who competes with honor. Continue to chase your greatness, because it is in each and every one of you in this community. Congratulations to our award winners – we are proud of you. Thank you to our gifted coaching staff. And thank you to our faculty and staff for the awesome support. It is a great day to be a Bomber!
