During assembly on Friday, October 18, Ryan Farmer spoke to students about the work and reach of the St. Louis Area Foodbank.
He said that one in seven people in the 26 counties which his organization serves is "food insecure," a fancy way of saying hungry. The foodbank partners with 500 agencies to distribute the donations it receives from local and national sources, including the USDA and food drives, like St. Louis World Food Day.
STLWFD has been held at Burroughs for seven years, and thousands of volunteers have packaged more than 2.7 million meals. This year's packaging marathon will be on Friday, November 1 in the field house.
Farmer said the foodbank always needs volunteers, and encouraged students to follow them on social media. His closing words were "Hunger can affect anyone ... Anyone can affect hunger."
