Winter Sports Awards

March 31, 2015

During assembly on Tuesday, March 31, the JBS coaching staff honored 28 varsity athletes who have been recognized for their achievements in winter sports by their leagues and the local press, and three athletes who have been 12-sport athletes over the course of their JBS careers. Before the awards were presented (see below), AD Peter Tasker spoke.

“Through the winter season, many of life’s great lessons were learned, new relationships were forged, personal limits were surpassed, there was joy, there was anguish, there was the exhilaration of true competition, there were great examples of teamwork overcoming formidable adversity, there were breathtaking moments of the finest sportsmanship, as well as moments where we fell short of our best selves, and, lest I forget, along the way we had lots of fun. I hope we did our best to deemphasize the importance of winning as our sole objective, taking a more philosophical and healthy approach of emphasizing the pursuit of excellence, and seizing the opportunities to foster growth in character that comes from struggle, setting goals, and making sacrifices. Competing with honor, playing with sportsmanship, picking up those whom we have knocked down, congratulating those who have excelled, even when they are our opponents; these are the marks of champions of the game of life. My hope is that we have grown in this regard, and that we have discovered insights to lead more fulfilled lives.

In capturing the spirit of true competition, I want to share a snippet of a great Coaches’ Corner piece written by Coach Kehr: … WE BEAT MICDS BY 2 POINTS! [the first time since 1994]. I almost start crying! … How in the honkin' world did we just do that? I'll tell you...your girls have heart. Your girls love each other and fight for each other. When one falls, there is another there to lift her up and cover for her. There are going to be mistakes, missteps, failures. The key is, how do they handle that?  That is the stuff that will carry on into later life, be it college, jobs, relationships, whatever! These girls did it! It was a TOTAL TEAM EFFORT! 2 points is one girl getting 4th instead of 5th, or 5th instead of 6th. EVERY GIRL MATTERS! And I think they know that, and I think that is one reason they care, and that is why they strive, and sacrifice, and overcome their fear of pain, or of failure, or whatever it is that would normally hold them back. They were FREE to have fun and race. There was no pressure. They raced for the joy of it. They raced for their teammates. And they prevailed despite the setbacks, and missteps. WELL DONE!

So, this morning we honor those who have by the grace of their effort, the support of their teammates, their coaches, their families and the entire Burroughs community achieved distinction in their sport.”
