Winter Sports Awards

April 6, 2017

During assembly on Friday, April 7, athletic director Peter Tasker and program coaches congratulated student athletes who have been honored by the press and various league organizations for their participation in winter sports. A full listing follows Tasker's opening remarks.

"Today we honor our winter athletes who were recognized for their achievements by their leagues and the local press, and those who have been 12-sport athletes over the course of their JBS careers. I would like to frame our awards ceremony today by sharing a recent experience of 16 members of the coaching staff, plus a couple of board members who joined us. We gathered as a group to try to articulate our mission, our why statement as pertains to participating in athletics at Burroughs. The way we did this was to tell stories about moments and events that we thought captured Burroughs athletics at its best. So we covered the walls with newsprint of beautiful stories of our teams and student-athletes that made us proud. One of my favorite stories was about one of our basketball teams, when we were really clobbering another team. Without the coach needing to tell the players, the Bombers stopped pressing, dropped into a less aggressive defense, slowed down their offense and let the opposing team have some opportunities. When the opposing team finally scored a basket, our entire team joined the celebration by applauding the basket. It was a great moment of shared humanity. I think that the Bombers chased their greatness and found their joy in this act.

"So, with the walls covered in newsprint of inspiring stories of Bomber athletics, with more lists of action verbs and adjectives than I have seen since high school, and having spent two full days talking about what we do when we are at our best, we pulled the language and themes out of these stories that captured the essence of why it is that we embark on the journey of Bomber sport at Burroughs. Here is what we crafted when the dust settled:

"Our Why or Mission Statement:
To champion character through athletics so that we cultivate holistic growth in self and community.

"What followed was our How statements, or how we endeavor to accomplish our mission statement:

  • Require and encourage multi-sport participation
  • Promote a positive, inclusive culture
  • Strive for balance
  • Compete with honor
  • Lead by example (in other words, we are good ambassadors of our community)
  • Chase our greatness
  • Seek joy in the journey

"It was indeed a powerful journey for us as a group of coaches and teachers. I hope what you take away from this is that Bomber sport is in many ways a stage upon which many of life’s great lessons unfold and are learned, and the most important thing that happens through your participation is your growth as a person, not the score on the scoreboard.

"Now, let’s get to the business at hand."
