Winter Sports Awards

April 3, 2018

During assembly on Tuesday, April 3, AD Peter Tasker and program coaches congratulated student athletes who have been honored by the press and various league organizations for their participation in winter sports. A full listing follows Tasker's opening remarks.

Sports. We play for fun. We play because physical activity is good for us. We play, on occasion, because the school makes us. We play for mastery. We play for growth. What other activity fills our heads and hearts with goals and dreams, requires us to put in long hours of practice, to sweat, to endure discomfort and physical pain, to sacrifice for self and for others, with a win/lose proposition, and when the whistle blows, we turn up the heat, and ask that you be your best selves? We expect you to fail often, to fall short of goals, to be disappointed, to face lots of adversity and to then persevere. We retool, come back out, and blow the whistle to play again. If you can perform with grace and integrity on this athletic stage, it is our hope that you will be well equipped to perform on the stage of life outside of these walls, when the pressures of money, prestige and power are on the line. Trust me, it can get very murky out there, where short term pressures can cloud long term goals, and you have to be absolutely clear about who you are and what you stand for. I would posit that they who can control their impulses our subconscious brains involuntarily push to the surface are best positioned to live up to their potential. This is where discipline comes into play. You have all developed a great deal of discipline through sport, as well as theater, music, art and the classroom. I congratulate you all on your journey thus far. It now gives me great joy to honor those who have achieved high mastery of their athletic activities of this past winter, those have been recognized by the media, and local coaching organizations.

Tasker continued, I salute you all, our entire student body, those who competed with honor, as well as those who supported our teams, our managers, our videographers and statisticians. I speak for the athletic administration and coaches in saying, it is a privilege to be part of the great journey of your growth. And, as I am fond of reminding, it is not the result of a contest that matters, but what you become in the pursuit of excellence is what really counts. May this pursuit drive us each and every day. Now, let us rejoice in spring! Today is, indeed, a great day to be a Bomber. Thank you.
