Winter Sports Awards

April 2, 2019

During assembly on Tuesday, April 2, AD Peter Tasker and program coaches congratulated 19 student athletes who have been honored by the media and various league organizations for their performance in winter sports. A full listing follows Tasker's opening remarks.

I start today with a note written by an MICDS parent after the Bombers closed out the Rams for the baseball District championship last May:

Since last night, I have been contemplating the words to use here to describe what I experienced yesterday, but the only thing which keeps coming to mind is first class. Last night, my son Wilson just happened to be the final batter for the District Championship game vs. his high school’s rival, John Burroughs. As a senior in high school, this had the potential to be his final at-bat. There were two outs and the tying run was on second base. His job at that point was to get a base hit to get the tying run home so that the game could continue into the bottom of the 7th inning. As luck would have it, he struck out. When he did, he collapsed at home plate, with the overwhelming weight of emotion he felt from the feeling that he lost the game for his team. Here is where I am just amazed by the selfless kindness of others. As he is kneeling over home plate unable to move, one of the coaches of our opposition, David Desloge, doesn’t go to celebrate with his team, but comes to the aid of my son. He helped him get to his feet, said some amazing things in support of his baseball skill and tenacity and gave him a hug. That show of sportsmanship and support of sport is what high school sports should always be about.

Well done, Coach Desloge. We talk a lot about how to bring to life our mission of championing character through athletics so that we cultivate holistic growth in self and community. Coach Desloge gave us a sterling example of what that can look like. Instead of following his impulse, he did the empathic thing and thought about how it must have felt to be Wilson. He placed the needs of others in front of himself. He showed us what service looks like. And I would argue that you cannot lead until you learn how to serve. I congratulate so many of you whom I see serving the needs of others every single day. Well done, and keep pushing forward on this path.

It now gives me great joy to honor those who have achieved high mastery of their athletic activities of this past winter, those have been recognized by the media, and local coaching organizations:

I salute you all, our entire student body, those who competed with honor, as well as those who supported our teams, our managers, our videographers and statisticians. I speak for the athletic administration and coaches in saying, it is a privilege to be part of your great journey of Bomber sport. And, as I am fond of reminding, it is not the result of a contest that matters, but what you become in the pursuit of excellence. It is overcoming the adversity, and the struggle to be your very best that prepares you for life beyond the walls of this venerable institution. The process is what we need to focus on, and to let the results serve to educate us.

Now, let us rejoice in spring! Today is, indeed, a great day to be a Bomber. Thank you.
