Terry Karl, Ph.D. ’66 was presented with the Outstanding Alumni Award in recognition of her extraordinary commitment to defending and protecting human rights and holding accountable those who violate them. Terry holds bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees in Latin American studies — all from Stanford University, where she is a professor of political science. She has received many awards for her writing, teaching, service, and research, and she was also named a University Fellow.
Terry’s expertise in public policy and Latin American politics has made her a frequent lecturer at the U.S. State Department and the Defense Department. She has testified before Congress, monitored elections in El Salvador for the United Nations, and accompanied many congressional delegations to Central America. She has written briefs for presentation before the U.S. Supreme Court, a book about oil booms, and a children’s book about the people of Vietnam.
